From Surface to Form: Print, paint, stamp & sew. Create a textile sculpture, an object, or an item of decor.

This workshop explores the exciting possibilities of blending three distinct artistic languages: Printmaking, painting and textile sculpture.

Jann Cheifitz and Tamar Mogendorff will lead the workshop over two sessions in Tamar’s Brooklyn studio, during which participants will undertake a hands-on material transformation from surface patterning into soft dimensional reliefs and/or textile sculpture.

 In the first session, participants will create surface designs on fabric exploring pattern, repetition, color and expressive imagery through printing, painting and stamping. In the second session, we’ll investigate how a two-dimensional surface design can be transformed into a three-dimensional form. Through processes of layering, shaping, padding and construction, printed and painted fabrics become tactile, textile objects or decor occupying a space between painting, sculpture, and textile.

 We’ll invite participants to consider ideas of translation, transformation, and materiality: How an image changes as it moves from one medium to another; how surface becomes form; and how a flat impression can acquire volume, presence and texture. Working intuitively and experimentally, participants will create unique pieces that emerge through the dialogue between image, color and the plasticity of textiles. The process emphasizes discovery, play, and the unexpected possibilities that arise when disciplines intersect.

 No prior experience is necessary, although familiarity with simple hand stitching is helpful. The workshop is open to all who want to play and are interested in exploring material, form and the evolving relationships between images and objects.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 26th: 12-4 and Tuesday evening, September 29: 6-9.
